Angel sat down and set up his pickle tub, placing it between his feet and finding a rhythm that suited his mood today. Once he found his rhythm the rest of the world was drowned out, when he was drumming he didn’t have to worry about AIDS or anything else, it was just him and his drums. That was when he could concentrate, today he just couldn’t seem to drown it out. Today one of his dearest friends had died of AIDS, and that made him think of how much time he had left and how many more things he would have time to do.
Just once before I die… He thought, continuing his drumming in a simple pattern, I want to love someone. Not like I love Mimi, or my any of my friends, I want to be in love with someone. And have them love me back, for who I am AIDS and all. But… can I love? Can I put someone in danger of catching what I have. Can I put someone else’s life in danger? I just don’t know.
Someone reached down, pulling Angel from his thoughts, to put a quarter on top of the pickle tub. He looked up in surprise. “Merry Christmas!” he called after the woman.
Back to his drumming. He started to do a more frantic rhythm when he heard something from a nearby ally-way. He started again, only to be interrupted by what sounded like a cough.
What the-? He thought to himself, he stood up and began towards the source of the sound, unsure whether or not this was the wisest of ideas. He hesitated and walked on. He looked around the seemingly empty ally-way. Something caught his eye. A person, huddled against the wall, coughing.
“Oh my god!” Angel gasped and picked up pace, heading for the mysterious stranger. “Are you okay honey?” He asked, looking the person up and down.
“I’m afraid so.” He replied.
Angel’s heart beat fast, wrestling with his ribs. “They get anything?”
“No, I had nothing to get. But they took my coat.” He said, Looking up at Angel, his brown eyes full of gratitude. Angel couldn’t tear his gaze from this mans face and he didn’t know why.
“Oh, you poor thing!” Angel said, trying his hardest not to flirt with this, very cute stranger. “I’m Angel.”
“Angel.” The man held out his hand to shake Angel’s. “Friends call me Collins. Tom Collins.”
“How about you come with me and we’ll get you cleaned up?”
“Sounds great.” He said with little enthusiasm.
“But I have somewhere to go at nine. If you don’t mind.”
“No, where?”
This was it. The moment of truth. Could Angel tell him? He took a breath.
“Life support.” He said simply, hoping that Collins knew what it was. He looked over to Collins and saw a blank look. “It’s a support group for people with AIDS… People like me.” He said simply.
“Me too.”
And that was that. Angel was officially in love.
